Hello, having 6 LEDs to show the current gear is not a big deal. The main question here is how you will get the current gear out from the CANbus. In case of automatic gearbox, this should be also quite easy, but if this is an manual gearbox a think CANbus will not help you much. Instead a kind of mechanical device will be necessary. Switch or Hall senor and mount around the shifter.
Hi, the best case is if you will find the codes already decoded somewhere on net. If not, then you need to make the reverse engineering yourself. There are couple of good resources on generic CAN bus reverse engineering, Google it

If i understand correctly, you want to actively reduce the power at higher RPMs either via some Ignition/Fuel cutoff or hacking into the drive by wire Throttle pedal. These are completely different scenarios, and in my project i'm only reading the Throttle values, that are already post-processed by the DME/ECU and sent to CANbus to other control units. I'm not modifying the ECU Throttle input in any way. So i'm unsure if you could use some portions of this project, because you need to trick and control the throttle pedal before the final xx% signal goes into the ECU - before it even reach the CANbus.
In my opinion, the better way is to tune up the whole Engine ECU via TunerPro or similar tools to stick with your league limits/rules of HP. Like that the ECU can never reach higher values of HP at all. But maybe i don't understand you correctly.
