How about a metronome that beeps and lights up? Why I think yes! Also same setup with separate code runs a Whack A Mole game!

About this project

So I've started sharing some of my projects and what I'm working on trying to give back to the Arduino community. This is a project I had in mind to help me with timing for another project I have been developing. It really started with me trying to figure out the timing in ms & bpm (beats per minute) so that I could calculate the timing of my light shows. So I went ahead and made something that flashes, beeps and displays the current bpm, aka a metronome.

The metronome is great in allowing me to figure out timing for songs when I either wanted to hear the beats while I look at the timing of the song or see the light. You just can't miss the blue lights out of the corner of your eye.

Side bar, I can use the exact same box setup, wiring etc. to make a sort of whack a mole game. One minor bug to fix in the code then I'll put this one up to. :)

Video shows me going over the setup prior to installing in final box setup.

Here is an in depth overview of the setup.

Button Design/wiring

  • all 4 buttons have one pin going to ground. (mate to this pin is unattached)
  • on opposite side of ground the pins go to:

1) Pin# corresponding to +1, +10, -1, -10 as assigned in setup.

2) Then through a diode (I used an LED), then to Pin#2 aka interrupt. Diode allows current to follow from interrupt pin#2 to ground and the one button pressed but not from others. THIS IS CRITICAL!! Also the pins are configured as high using the internal pull up resistors.

Code Structure

  • Loop only to reference blink function
  • Blink function to control blink rate
  • blink has a base blink on time
  • blink off time is calculated by [blink on time - milliseconds of BPM calculation] Pit falls of this calculation are that at high speeds (~1200 BPM) an error will occur, this can be avoided by reducing blink on time.
  • Use interrupt for button pushed.

Interrupt triggers evaluate function to evaluate which button was pressed. Which results in:

  • Button push triggers BPM functions according to button functions either change BPM to +1, +10, -1 or -10.
  • Additionally causes BPM to be written to display via ITOA library.
  • Causes recalculation of millisecond of each beat for blink function

The next steps in vamping this up for me is to redo the box appearance adding a switch that can turn on/off the music. Also using a different on/off switch and allowing battery access from the outside. Additionally I may try to have it to where I can both have the Metronome sketch and a whack a mole sketch uploaded then selected by a separate switch.

Design Structure
-1 led that will flash with BPM (Beat Per Minute)
-4 buttons to change BPM, +1, +10, -1, -10
-1 display to show BPM rate
-added a buzzer for sound 7/19/18

Button Design/wiring
-all 4 buttons have one pin going to ground. (mate to this pin is unattached)
-on opposite side of ground the pins go to:
  1) Pin# correspoding to +1, +10, -1, -10 as assigned in setup
  2) go through a diode (low voltage led possibly), then to Pin#2 aka interrupt.
Diode allows current to follow from interupt pin#2 and one pressed buttons but not from others

Code Structure
-Loop only to reference blink function
-Blink function to control blink rate
*blink has a base blink on time
*blink off time is cacluated by [blink on time - milliseconds of BPM calculation]
Pit falls of this calculation are that at high speeds (~1200 BPM) an error will occur, this can be avoided by reducing blink on time
-Use interupt for button pushes
-interupt triggers evaluate function to evaluate which button was pressed
  *button push triggers BPM functions
*button functions either change BPM to +1, +10, -1 or -10

Schematics

Fritzing PDF printout of configuration
Note that the the push button pins are configured with the internal pull up resistor and no resistor is on that line. Forget to have it as a pull up or add in a resistor would be really bad. (sketch configured for pull up resistors) Also I omitted the redundant blue LEDs and instead of yellow LEDs put red in, any color would work.
