As @Gerson rigtly pointed out there was no need of a transistor in this case.
My first project on Arduino is with only a LED (without transistor).

Wanted to try analogWrite for this example. However digitalWrite could also be used but then the code needs to be modified as below
Replace "analogWrite" with "digitalWrite"
Replace "255" with "HIGH"
Replace "0" with "LOW"
