You can do so by measuring the resistance between the sensing element terminals.
Thermocouples work by having two different pieces of metals stuck together which create small voltage differences when they are heated. So they have a very low resistance (0-3 Ohms) when measured.
Thermisters show a change in resistance upon heating so they have a relatively larger resistance of 50+ Ohms
Across the 24V power line.
Also make sure you pay close attention to BJT connections which change with the particular BJT you use, I had to reverse mine to get it working. Emitters connect to the 100ohm resistor, Bases to the 1k and Collectors are facing outwards.
