I think that you will need to use a different library for the shield 2 and not the one that I used. Please check this.
The SD card is optional, if its there it will stores the things if not it will continue in the code.
Are you using a Mega or an UNO?
For the shield that you are using the com ports probably are different. I do not know that shield.
Regarding the SD card, probably you have a mistake in the wire connections.
The configurations that I used are for this SIM900 shield, Arduino MEGA and using an older arduino IDE version (actual at the time that I did this project). Other variations you will need to adapt to the components that you have.
Quick Google sometimes does not hurt.
