Hi Bryan,
first of all, sorry for my late response. I just saw you response for the first time.
1. Yes, that's correct. I choose to keep the 12v LED's and the transistors to be more flexible when it comes to picking parts for the project.- That's true.But you will face a litte more things you have to change. For example, the soundboard is now controlled with GPIO's. When you add more buttons with their own sounds, you have to control the soundboard with UART.

within the coming weeks I will look into the code for adding a countdown timer based game.
Over $100 for just 2 7seg displays.. That's a lot.... Glad to hear you can create your own displays.
