The type of GSM module you should buy completely depends on which country you live in, when I did my GSM project I used Cheap GSM 800L module from ebay
And you can use any arduino available in the market for this, the next thing is code, please first do the projects like just sending/receiving message to arduino and displaying on serial monitor, then refer to other arduino tutorials on SMS home automation control.
