    How did you connect to the ESP8266? Did you use the UART and if so what firmware was running on the ESP8266?

    This should absolutely work. I do not think rain should be a problem if the sensitivity is tuned properly (to respond only to the foot). Capacitive sensors are in fact advantageous in this situation as they are not in direct contact with the subject.

    No, the resolution we got in reality was 1 mm. If the device is outside of a container and in an uncontrolled environment, I think you could use some shielding to get a good signal.
